Client Requirements

The client wanted a custom Arabescato marble fireplace tailored to the project’s design scheme.

Since Arabescato is a natural marble, even slabs from the same quarry can differ significantly in base color, veining direction, and natural speckling. Therefore, this project required not only confirmation of the fireplace’s shape and dimensions, but also resolution of two practical issues before fabrication.

Issue 1: How to confirm the final stone selection given the unique veining and color of each natural marble slab?

The designer had clear expectations for the final stone effect. After reviewing our actual stone samples, she paid close attention to the overall veining and was particularly concerned about brown discoloration and dark grey speckles that might appear in the marble. When photos of different stones showed color differences, she wanted to confirm whether these were due to the stone itself or the lighting conditions during photography.

The client needed to know, before fabrication:

What is the actual color of the final stone, how is the veining distributed, and do the natural speckles meet the project’s design requirements?

Issue 2: Why is the marble fireplace shipped in separate pieces and assembled on site, rather than as a single unit?

After the fireplace was completed, the client noticed from the installation instructions that the product would not be shipped as a fully assembled unit, but rather as individually packaged stone components to be assembled on site. The client asked: since the fireplace was completed at the factory, why couldn’t it be shipped as a single assembled piece?

Our Solution

01 | Final stone confirmation through actual material photos, multiple options, and sample approval

Before production, we did not select the material based solely on the stone name or a standard sample. Instead, we provided photos of actual Arabescato marble blocks available for the project so the designer could directly assess the veining and color.

After reviewing the first stone option, the designer approved the overall veining but was concerned about the brown discoloration, so she requested to compare other options.

We then provided another stone option. During further comparison, the client noticed dark grey speckles in the first stone and asked about the distribution of these natural features across the entire block. Additionally, because the photos of the second option appeared slightly blue due to lighting, the designer requested images that better represented the true color.

To address this, we re-photographed the actual stone under natural daylight to help the client judge the color more accurately.

In addition to photo comparisons, the client also requested physical stone samples of the different options.

Through actual stone photos, comparison of different blocks, natural daylight images, and physical samples, the designer confirmed the stone selection for the fireplace, and we proceeded with fabrication using the approved material.

For custom natural marble projects, this confirmation process is not to guarantee that every piece will look identical, but to ensure the client understands the natural characteristics of the stone before cutting and can make an informed choice based on the real material.

02 | Segmented shipping for safer transport and installation of large marble fireplaces

After the fireplace was completed, we provided the client with installation instructions. The designer asked why the fireplace needed to be assembled on site rather than shipped as a fully assembled unit from the factory.

We explained the reasons for segmented shipping:

First, marble is very heavy. Shipping a fully assembled fireplace increases the overall weight and structure, making handling more difficult and raising the risk of cracking or damage during transport.

Second, after delivery, the fireplace must be moved from the unloading area to the installation location. Dividing the fireplace into separate stone components reduces the weight of each piece, making it easier to move through doorways and hallways.

Additionally, site walls and floors are rarely perfectly level. With segmented installation, installers can adjust the position and angle of each component on site before aligning, bonding, and securing them.

The client had previously noticed that some joints between stone pieces in the factory photos were not tightly fitted. We clarified that the fireplace in the factory photos was only temporarily assembled for display using wooden supports, not the final installation state. During actual installation, the angles and positions can be adjusted from the rear to achieve tighter joints.

Therefore, this fireplace was ultimately packaged and shipped in separate pieces, with installation instructions provided for the on-site team to complete the final assembly.

Design & Production Process

Phase 1: Inquiry, Quotation & Design Adjustment (Nov 4–5, 2025)

Phase 2: Stone Selection & Sample Confirmation (Nov 12 – Dec 4, 2025)

"We see some dark grey 'speckles' throughout the first stone option. Will these appear across the entire block?"

"Could you send better daylight photos of the second option? The images you shared look blueish, but I believe that's due to the photography setup."

Phase 3: CAD Drawing Confirmation & Production (Dec 5, 2025 – Jan 10, 2026)

1) Technical Drawings

Phase 4: Final Inspection, Shipping & Delivery (Jan 13 – Feb 28, 2026)

Client surprised that assembly is required (Feb 3, 2026)

"Isn’t this supplied as one fully assembled piece?! We were never informed that the fireplace would need assembly."

Explanation of segmented shipping (Feb 4, 2026)

For stone fireplaces, surrounds are normally shipped in multiple pieces rather than a single pre-assembled unit. This is industry standard for the following reasons:

  • Safe transportation: A one-piece marble surround is much heavier and carries a much higher risk of cracking during transit.
  • Easier handling and installation: Segmented components fit through doorways and allow precise positioning on site.
  • Better site fitting: Wall and floor conditions vary. Segmented installation lets installers level and align all components neatly.

The pieces are secured in place with stone adhesive and anchors following installation guidelines. Any qualified contractor or stone installer can complete this work.

Looking to customize a natural marble fireplace per your design?

Customizing a natural marble fireplace involves more than just selecting a stone name and a set of dimensions.

If your project is sensitive to stone color, veining, or natural speckling, you can further confirm the material before cutting through actual stone photos, natural daylight images, and physical samples.

For large marble fireplaces, we also recommend confirming site dimensions and installation conditions before production, and understanding the segmented shipping and installation requirements in advance.

If you already have reference images, design drawings, or site measurements, you can share these with us. We can further refine the stone selection, dimensions, and production plan for your fireplace based on your actual project needs.
