Donatello’s Equestrian Monument of Erasmo da Narni Bronze Statue
The Equestrian Statue of Gattamelata was sculpted by Italian early Renaissance artist Donatello, who is also known for his first version of the biblical figure David. The statue dates back to 1453 and is currently located in the Piazza del Santo in Padua, Italy. The bronze sculpture portrays the Renaissance captain Erasno da Narni, known as Gattamelata, who served under the Republic of Venice for most of his service.
Donatello’s Equestrian Monument of Erasmo da Narni Bronze Statue measures 340 x 390 cm, with the base measuring 780 x 410 cm. It is the earliest surviving Renaissance equestrian statue and the first to bring out the Classical equestrian portraiture grandeur.
This bronze statue was made using the lost wax method. It sits on a pedestal, and both the subjects are made in life-size. Donatello utilized emotion, position and symbolism to convey the subject’s power. Moreover, the sculptor did not add any embellishments or any grand adjustments to the statue and captured the essence of his subject as he was in the real life.
Gattamelata sits on his horse, with a faraway look in his eyes. The sculptor captures his subject with a serious emotion on his face. He has been exhibited as a calm, alert and watchful leader. The Renaissance themes of individuals and humanism are the force of character depiction in this bronze statue.
The horse is as alert, self-contained and brave-looking as his rider. The realistic depiction of Erasmo da Narni in his muscular form indicates the Renaissance's concern with anatomical study.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini St. Teresa Marble Statue
Titled the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, this marble statue is the centerpiece of a sculptural group in a white marble set that is placed in an elevated aedicule in the Cornaro Chapel, Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome. Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s St. Teresa marble statue was designed as part of the setting of the Chapel in marble, stucco and paint. It is considered to be one of the sculptural magnum opuses of the High Roman Baroque.
Depicting the Teresa of Avila, the two central figures of the swooning nun and the angel with the spear have been inspired by an episode that was described by Teresa of Avila, a mystical cloistered Discalced Carmelite reformer and nun, in her autobiography.
The entire setup of the sculptural group was overseen and completed by Bernini during the Pamphili papacy of Innocent X. This beautiful work was commissioned by the papal patronage to Bernini.
A small terracotta version of about 47 cm was created between 1644 and 1647. The statue represents the first embodiment of the project; it now belongs to the Hermitage Museum’s collection.
Michelangelo’s Pieta Marble Statue
The Pieta is a beautiful sculpture by Renaissance artists Michelangelo. This fine statue is housed in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City, where plenty of Michelangelo’s work is displayed. Michelangelo’s Pieta marble statue was commissioned by the French Cardinal Jean de Bilheres, the French ambassador in Rome.
Made from the gorgeous Italian Carrara marble, the sculpture was made for the cardinal’s funeral monument. It was moved to its current location in the 18th century to the first chapel on the north side after the gateway of the basilica. Apparently, it is the only work that Michelangelo ever signed.
This marvelous piece of art features the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the episode of Crucifixion. Michelangelo’s understanding of the Pieta is unforeseen in Italian sculpture and balances the Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism. In 2019, a small terracotta version acknowledged as a model for the final statue was exhibited in Paris.
It is shaped as a pyramid and the vertex coincides with Mary’s head. The statue extends down the drapery of Mary’s dress robe to the base. The relationship between the two figures is made quite evident. Moreover, the marks of Crucifixion have been depicted as small nail marks and a hint of the side wound.
The artist wanted to create a work that could be described as “the heart’s image.” It is safe to say that he succeeded in what he set out to do.
